What you must know

The installation of heating floors is rather simple. In fact, the longest step is the planning. Here is some information on PROTHERM systems.

1) Respect of instructions is mandatory: PROTHERM heating cable is an electric product. It can be installed by an electrician, a ceramic installer or directly by the customer. The respect of the instructions still remains the key to success in the installation. We highly recommend that the continuity test should be done as explained and illustrated.

2) The underlayment: The PROTHERM floor heating system can be installed on plywood, cement or existing tile work or any other compatible surface. As long as it is covered by a high quality mortar.

3) Substrate: A heating floor system can be installed under most floor coverings; ceramic tiles, slate, marble, granite, stone, laminated floors* or high technology wood floors*.

4) The probe: Once the installation of the cable is completed, the installation of the thermostat probe must be done. The probe can be found in the thermostat box.

5) The installation must be protected. In the time between the application of the adhesive and the flooring installation, the cables need to be protected with cardboard and the access to the heating zone must be protected in order to avoid any damages due to circulation.

6) Covering: The use of PROFIX products is suggested since they are 100% compatible with PROTHERM systems. It is suggested to cover the cables with a self-leveler (p.5) since it is made of free-flowing self-leveling cement, which limits the risks of breaking the cables. It is also possible to cover the cables with mortar. (see pp. 6, 7 & 9)

7) Installation of flooring: Due to the thermostat’s numerous start/stop cycles within the course of a day, it is important that a highly flexible mortar is used to compensate. PROFIX mortars are recommended. (see pp. 6, 7 & 9)

8) The final connection: The final connection of the thermostat must be done by an electrician.

9) Usage: A 28 days waiting period must be observed before the use of the floor heating system (time for the cure of the grout and mortar to be complete).

What to avoid

  • Install the heated part of the cable in the wall
  • Install the cable under a permanent piece of furniture or a place where air will not circulate properly
  • Install anything in the floor once the installation is complete
  • Install heating cables within a 3” distance from each other
  • Cut or cross the cables
  • Modify the cable
